ABSTRACT

This chapter examines issues of perception and practice regarding the Art Song genre, designated an “endangered species” by its own professional network. A brief overview of its current pedagogical status correlated with its performance market trajectories leads to a set of proposals for a systemic paradigmatic transformation. Catalyzed through shifts to university curricula, a re-visioning of its artistic domain empowers a sustainable future for the art form, its students, and its emerging artists.
