ABSTRACT

In this chapter, singing acquisition in infancy is viewed primarily as vocal learning and through the lens of social learning theories. This means that all vocal learning and vocalises need to be considered in order to understand the early acquisition of singing skills, including those that may be of linguistic origin. It is suggested that early acquisition of singing skill can be described through the interaction of two models of learning, i.e. social learning theory and complex skill acquisition. Given the right quality of feedback and stimulation, culturally accurate singing skills can be mastered early in life.
