ABSTRACT

This chapter summarises some of the evidence that songs can support the learning and retrieval of linguistic information, and outlines two classroom-based studies that explore whether singing can support younger learners’ foreign language skills. Although the two studies were conducted in different contexts, they show that songs can support foreign language learning from early school age to adolescence, adding to our knowledge in this area. Current research suggests that foreign language learners can benefit from using songs to support their learning, and future studies should explore the mechanisms behind the observed advantages for singing on foreign language learning and memory.
