ABSTRACT

This chapter describes the innovative ways that we use songs in mathematics education. We do not use music as a representational context to help students better understand mathematics concepts, such as ratio and proportion, nor to support memorization. Rather, we use song as a form of human communication that helps us share emotions, experiences and intentions, because we also see mathematics as a fully human experience. Even though our perspective may be unusual and for many, it seems acceptable to say, “I am not a math person”, in this chapter we ask, “What mathematics experiences are worth singing about?”
