ABSTRACT

In this chapter, we focus on the psychological well-being of mineworkers in Postmasburg. The sample of 238 mineworkers displayed strong work engagement and were fairly satisfied with workplace practices (employee care, respect from the organisation and a not unreasonable intrusion of work into workers’ private lives). Higher levels of satisfaction with workplace practices correlated with higher levels of work engagement and decreased burnout. The mine-employed mineworkers were more likely than contractor mineworkers to view their employer as trustworthy and to believe that their employer valued their contributions to the mine. They, however, experienced more burnout and displayed poorer work engagement.
