ABSTRACT

This essay comments on some points Alastair V. Campbell makes in his general introduction to the topic of ethics in research in his book, Bioethics – the Basics. These points include his concern about offering food as an incentive to participate in research conducted during an epidemic, and a restriction on the level of risk for research involving incapacitated persons. The essay cites recently revised international ethical guidelines issued by the Council for International Organizations of Medical Sciences (CIOMS) as providing a helpful source for guidance on some of the more contentious issues in research ethics.
