ABSTRACT

This chapter provides a framework for examining the impact of a particular tourism destination context upon policy and planning. The destination context is that of failing destinations and the planning and policy issues are framed around revitalisation of these failing destinations. The chapter stresses the imperative of understanding both the nature of the destinations themselves and their influence upon planning processes of revitalisation. The chapter examines the context of these destinations in terms of their demand and supply side characteristics and goes on to analyse this context in terms of its ability to promote or hinder revitalisation. Success factors are identified which include the need for a champion, a whole of destination approach and adequate financing for revitalisation. Finally, the chapter analyses destination contexts for revitalisation in terms of their stakeholder landscape, network analysis and communities of practice.
