ABSTRACT

Since the end of the 20th century, as a result of the struggles of indigenous and Afro-descendant peoples in Latin America, different types of universities have been created that are often generically referred to as “intercultural universities.” This chapter offers an overview of the diversity of institutional arrangements, while paying special attention to the modes of learning developed within them. In addition, to understand the current situation of Higher Education amongst the indigenous and Afro-descendant populations of Latin America, one must consider not only their present reality but also significant aspects of their history. It is well-known that the history of America has been strongly marked by conquest and colonization involving massacres, land dispossessions, displacements, and the social and territorial reorganization of the original inhabitants of the continent, as well as by the massive importation of groups of enslaved Africans.
