ABSTRACT
Globalization and climate change are impacting on the tropical regions of the world in significant ways, especially in rural communities that depend on farming and pastoralism for their livelihoods. The lack of development in rural regions pushes people to migrate to places where they perceive that there are more opportunities. Investments in infrastructure that facilitate exports, and investments in urban centres, have prevailed over investment in infrastructure in rural regions, especially in the Altiplano in the case of Peru. The Tropical Andes are the largest continental mountain range in the world, extending approximately 7,000 kilometres, and containing 99% of the world’s tropical glaciers. The Andean region runs from north to south on the western side of South America. Climate variability and change are increasing food insecurity in the Andes. The impacts of climate change, expressed in warming, extreme events, and changing weather patterns are a call to action.
