ABSTRACT

As set out in Perl and Memmert, "The intention of Key Performance Indicators (KPI) is to map complex systems behavior to single numbers for scaling, rating and ranking systems or system components". The derived KPIs can be used in two ways. A first way is to follow the time-depending sequences of the KPI values of athletes or teams, for example, to detect reasons for weak phases or to confirm the success of training concepts. A second way is to compare the KPI values of the members of sets of athletes or teams in order to generate rankings. The idea of using soccer as a basis for discussing KPIs is based on the fact that it combines most of the aspects of KPIs from the single athlete up to the level of team activities. The chapter introduces the method of Fuzzy modelling and discusses the basic concepts and methods of net-based pattern recognition based on the example of sport funding.
