ABSTRACT

In this chapter we focus on certain aspects of the relations between the empire of Nicaea and states or players that functioned to its west (i.e. the Latin Empire of Constantinople, the state of Epiros, the papacy, etc.). Diplomatic documents, historiographical accounts, rhetorical works, and letters are comparatively examined in order to shed some light on the ways and forms these relations took during the years 1204–1261, and on how political propaganda chose to present them.
