ABSTRACT
This chapter discusses three passages in Manganeios Prodromos’ poetry which refer to occasions in 1147, 1149 and 1159 when Byzantine armies led by the emperor Manuel clashed with Western armies and their leaders. Manganeios, writing for the public in Constantinople, describes the events in terms which reveal he expects his audience to be xenophobic.
