ABSTRACT

This chapter considers how the educational and campaigning practices of non-governmental organizations (NGOs) shape the perceptions and values of the Northern publics who support the organisations’ activities towards their Southern counterparts. It examines the NGO phenomenon through a public value lens, drawing specifically on the paradigms that underlie development activities; the actual interventions and processes surrounding them to create societal benefits; and the lobbying and advocacy practices of NGOs to Northern communities to galvanise their support to achieve a more equitable and just society. In recognition of the dichotomy of a Southern–Northern public that is unique to NGOs, the chapter explores the activities of NGOs through a public value lens. It also examines the charity and rights based philosophies that underlie NGO activities; evaluated the programmes and projects aimed at the communities served; and assesses the campaigning, fundraising and educational practices of NGOs.
