ABSTRACT

This chapter deals with an appraisal of the prospects for the development of public value (PV) strategies within university schools of social science. It presents a blueprint for an alternative, PV, model of university social science schools that is designed to address their shared contemporary challenges through an explicit commitment to, and prioritisation of, delivering economic and social value. The chapter outlines of a post-disciplinary, challenge-led, and impactful model for the delivery of new public social science with university social science schools. After using John Brewer’s conception of the new public social science to specify the output element of the implementation triangle, it describes the higher education management literature to outline environmental and capacity elements that will influence the development of public social science within higher education. Building on Brewer’s articulation of the PV of social science, the chapter provides an implementation triangle for university social science schools.
