ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book aims to support one in their professional learning and development as a mentor to enable them effectively to be able to support beginning physical education teachers to learn and develop towards becoming outstanding teachers. It discusses the practical application of a range of topics particularly relevant to mentoring beginning physical education teachers. As in teaching, there is basic knowledge, understanding and skills for mentoring. However, effective mentoring also requires the development of professional judgement in order to be able to adapt skills to meet the demands of a specific situation, to be able to use the right skill in the right way at the right time, to take account of the needs and abilities of each beginning physical education teacher..
