ABSTRACT

A 2016 Pew Research Center study found that the majority of US adults get news on social media, and 38 percent reported they often get news from digital sources including news websites, apps, or social media sites. The new digital requirement that emerged from the 2016 cycle is not what was expected. Advances in technology occurred, new platforms emerged, existing channels gained capability, more Americans were online and content creators than ever before, and a greater number of campaign professionals were digitally enabled. Clinton and Trump differed both in their personal use and experience with social media, and in how their respective campaign and political party organizations planned, staffed, and utilized the full complement of digital organizing strategies, technology, and techniques. In 1965 the founder of Intel, Gordon Moore, made a prediction that became the "gold standard" for our modern digital revolution.
