Feminist Engagement with the Economy

This chapter explores the multiple and contested meanings of ‘the economy’ from a feminist geographic perspective. Our discussion engages with the theoretical foundations of, and empirical work in, feminist geography on gender and the economy to study diverse economic processes and practices from myriad perspectives. We highlight scholarship that provides a feminist framework to analyse, critique and transform the socio-political processes that drive and constitute the economy. In so doing, we show how feminist scholars have enhanced geographical approaches to the economy by broadening the theories, methods and objects that are traditionally sites of economic knowledge production.
