ABSTRACT

The United States (US) has served as a main destination of immigrants and refugees from across the globe, creating a rich and complex mix of ethnic origins, languages, religions, and cultural practices. A key aspect of the resettlement of immigrants is their engagement in education. While public schools are ostensibly open to all, many are ill equipped to handle the cultural and language diversity that new immigrants bring. Refugees and immigrants entering any country bring with them unique needs. The most current and controversial group of refugees seeking refuge and resettlement in the US, as well as many other countries, are from Syria. Understanding and supporting children and families who experience trauma is a key in working with new immigrants and refugees. The realities of a diverse world with increasingly porous borders mean that there will be refugees and new immigrants arriving to our country, communities, and schools in the future.
