ABSTRACT

This chapter explores how studying music illustrates conceptual issues in studies on men and masculinity/ies and how studies on men and masculinities can inform analyses of music cultures. It does this in three ways: 1) outlining how ‘masculinity’ has been theorised in relation to musical texts and aesthetics; 2) understanding the link between men/masculinities and music’s appeal; and 3) looking at how the global production of music is gendered. The chapter demonstrates particularly how a pluralistic understanding of men and masculinities, in relation to intersections of race, geopolitics ethnicity and class, are essential in an analysis of music.
