ABSTRACT

This part introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters. The part addresses a fundamental ethical problem communicated in the name “Halluci Nation,” transforming the word “hallucination”. It discusses the potential solidarity between groups that are sometimes regarded as separate and opposed. The part aims to make palpable the fierce determination in the present moment to grapple with histories of colonialism, domination, racism, racialization, sexism, misogyny, violence, privilege, and power, and the impact of this moment on the sonic arts. It considers the “persistent insistence” of which Archie Shepp writes is embedded in the music. The sunlight streaming through the South-facing windows is accompanied by steady clicks from patrons typing on laptops.
