ABSTRACT

In this chapter, Susan McClary and Jacqueline Warwick discuss complicated intersections of popular music, power, gender, and sexuality in our current moment. They argue that paying attention to music is critical in times of cultural crises and emphasize the ways that music offers comfort, community, strength, and courage. McClary and Warwick discuss the political potential of popular music with an ear to history, turning their attention to broad histories of popular music performance, participation, and scholarship.
