ABSTRACT

Creative and playful approaches offer clients the freedom to choose how to communicate. This chapter discusses several of these approaches, including play therapy, such as sandtray, puppets, and games; art, including coloring, drawing, and manipulation of clay or play dough; music therapy; writing, and phototherapy. Each benefits the client neurologically, therapeutically, and relationally, giving the client control while providing an opportunity to externalize problems, find solutions, and consider steps toward hoped-for futures. This chapter provides different ideas and considerations for applying each of these approaches.
