ABSTRACT

When Nancy Gershman invited me to write about memory reconsolidation she suggested that I first experience a prescriptive memory session with her. I shared that I had been bothered by the recent death of our 21-year-old cat, Tigger, and was inundated by feelings of loss and guilt. It seemed that that my grief over losing Tigger was triggering other memories of loss. I recalled holding the ailing Tigger in my lap, swaddled like a baby, while writing and doing my work. Nancy asked for a digital picture of Tigger and myself, and suggested that she could enhance or change the image. It was out of focus and included distracting elements, so I asked her to focus on Tigger. I was delighted with the first result, a soft image of our loyal beloved cat. I then asked her to focus on Tigger’s eyes and remove my facial features.
