ABSTRACT

In this chapter, we present the historical influences on the current practice of career counseling. Career counseling encompasses all aspects of the clients served by mental health and career counselors, regardless of clients’ presenting issues. The history of the profession demonstrates the ways that the practice of counseling for career issues is inextricably bound with social, cultural, and political trends. More importantly, we have laid the groundwork for students’ discovery of the degree to which personal and career issues are consistently intertwined. Therefore, professional counselors must be well trained in providing assistance around career issues.
