This chapter looks at new and evolving technologies that, when properly conjoined, may prove essential to the success of universities moving forward. Machine learning sits on the tier two application of AI, which only analyzes raw data but also looks for patterns in the data that can yield further insights. Deep learning is a third-tier application, which analyzes data, data patterns but goes even further. Though work on student retention has been conducted for decades, with notable work by researchers such as Tinto, Astin, and others, the first large-scale attempt to look at the problem of online retention across multiple institutions was the Predictive Analytics Reporting Framework.
