ABSTRACT

There is a global movement towards greening the physical environment of office spaces. However, empirical studies on the benefits of office greenery have found mixed results. In this chapter we review research on physical greening, demonstrating that it can beneficially impact on organizational behaviour outcomes such as productivity, stress, and job satisfaction. We then outline different theoretical explanations for these effects. Finally, we discuss how the social identity approach can help researchers understand why greening has positive effects in some contexts but not in others, and how greening may play an important role in encouraging pro-environmental behaviour.
