ABSTRACT

This chapter analyzes the life-narratives of three women activists from Kerala, India: C.K.Janu is a tribal woman activist, Leelakumariammastruggled for bringing an endto the aerial spraying of the carcinogenic pesticide, and Mayilamma was a tribal woman leader of the campaign against the overexploitation of the groundwater resources by Coca-Cola. These women are grassroots “oikos-carers,” involved in local struggles on the periphery of mainstream environmental activism. Their ecofeminist ethics springs from desires to restore their home (oikos),empowering public awareness and political action along the lines of what Vandana Shiva calls “earth democracy.”
