ABSTRACT

In this chapter, the author presents a threefold analysis of her observations: First, what the subjects initial written reactions were in both groups. Second, the subjects’ verbal and nonverbal communication styles when discussing each image. Finally, initial reactions compared to verbal reactions with both groups. Each student involved provided detailed responses and actively participated in the group discussion administered honest opinions and were incredibly respectful towards one another. The participants in the second focus group, the beginner students were ages 18 to 21 and had little to no knowledge regarding photography. The participants may have kept certain emotions to themselves for a variety of reasons, perhaps embarrassment or uncertainty of how to process such strong emotions with each image. The focus groups could have been larger, involving more participants to produce more results and emotions.
