ABSTRACT

This chapter provides an example of the way in which research focusing on a particular group can lead to practical solutions that benefit all students. For some years now science education in relation to girls has been a focus of American, British and European research. While initially the concern was with the importance of science to girls, more recently the emphasis has shifted somewhat to examine also the importance of girls to science. The chapter demonstrates that at lower secondary level the exposure of all students to the same multidisciplinary science syllabus for the same amount of time is conducive to equal achievement by males and females. A major reorganisation of upper secondary science is clearly called for, to make the study of a multidisciplinary, gender-inclusive science curriculum compulsory for all students for approximately one-sixth of their total programme of study.
