ABSTRACT

In this chapter, we describe the strategies of grounded theories that make grounded theory a set of distinct methods. These strategies characterize each method of grounded theory and enable the researcher to focus on processes that conceptually and theoretically develop a model or theory. The section, The Landscape of Grounded Theory Methods, is a compendium of grounded theory literature (both monographs and grounded theory texts) including (1) those authored by Glaser and Strauss, their collaborators, and students; (2) those authored by other researchers explicating grounded theory methods; (3) articles and handbooks addressing special topics within grounded theory methods; and (4) articles and chapters that summarize, clarify, and simplify grounded theory methods.

In the final section we provide an overview of the development of methods from Glaser and Strauss to Schatzman’s dimensional analysis, Charmaz’s grounded theory, and Clarke’s situational analysis.
