ABSTRACT

This chapter highlights fundamental tenets of classic or Glaserian grounded theory. Phyllis Noerager Stern, one of the chapter co-authors, was a student of Barney Glaser and Anselm Strauss in the 1970s while completing her doctor of nursing science degree from the University of California, San Francisco. Stern learned firsthand important tenets that she and Caroline Jane Porr believe are fundamental to past, present, and future grounded theory methods. Stern had shared these early learnings about the “how-tos” of grounded theory for many years in concise and accessible writings up until her death in 2014, including a book that she published with Porr in 2011. Based on Stern’s grounded theory study of home fires, Porr uses Stern’s writings to offer a brief walk-through of some of these established tenets of Glaserian grounded theory in addition to some of the historical background.
