ABSTRACT

The meetings, incentive travel, conventions, exhibitions (MICE) industry is, globally, one of the more sought-after travel segments by destination, due to being considered a high-yield visitor segment with participants staying for multiple days. Accommodation is a principal benefactor of MICE, with many hotels increasingly equipped and designed to host meetings and staff trained specifically for MICE business. As with events, MICE activities need to follow the event management process of being initiated, planned, staged and implemented. As such MICE events can be part of a tendering process to win the meeting at the destination. Meeting planners will need to consider a range of site selection criteria. An association with regional or global membership may rotate cyclical meetings to different destinations in fairness to membership. The rise of the shared economy and the move away from the traditional hotel booking model in recent years have provided more alternative room choices, such as apartments and vacation homes.
