ABSTRACT

In this chapter the author outlines some important trends in youth culture and how they have left their mark on the thinking and, thereby, the motivation and learning of young people. The young 'self-supporters' build up their own worlds. They mainly pick up the bricks for this from the widespread pop culture and the lifestyles of their peers. The point of departure for the author's understanding is that the dominant culture of the young generation is almost entirely rooted in their own world. Supporting the students' identity development; help them to build 'corridors of relevance', and to believe in themselves in a changeable world. The students' motivation is divided between the young people's identity development and youth-cultural norms and influences. They need to develop their own preferences and norms and self-awareness to increasingly be able to manage their own learning and development.
