ABSTRACT

This chapter describes an account of the work and evolution of Children's Joy organization by means of documentary study utilizing archival resources as well as through oral history. Explanations for the different developments that characterize the unique model of an extracurricular leisure organization are sought and an attempt is made to analyse its specific relation with the local leisure policy of the Antwerp education department. The chapter explores a comparison of this initiative with other existing leisure education models as part of an evaluation of the role and function of leisure in relation to the school system. Undoubtedly, one of the most remarkable characteristics of the Antwerp municipal education system is the provision of organized leisure activities. In 1914, in response to pressure from 'anti-clerics', the municipality of Antwerp decided to organize vacation classes, where children could visit schools during their vacations to play under the supervision of teachers.
