ABSTRACT

In order to understand and ultimately achieve a solution to the puzzle that each crime scene represents, a number of different entities must work together. These entities include the initial responding officers, the crime scene technicians, the investigators, and the laboratory scientists. The role of the initial responding officer is critical, and prior authors such as Geberth and Griffin and Slack have effectively assisted in defining this role. Initial responding officers do not process scenes; the crime scene technician or investigator accomplishes processing. The basic goals of incident management that the initial responder is responsible for can be achieved and expressed in five specific objectives at the crime scene. It includes Document the provided information, not becomes a casualty, Provide for emergency care, Secure and control the scene and all those within it, and Release the scene to the appropriate authorities.
