ABSTRACT
Alchemy is the art concerned with the transmutation of base metals, but it also is an important natural philosophy. In the Islamicate world, it was generally accepted, although there were also critiques. The knowledge of alchemy was considered a secret, to be transmitted only to an élite. Processes central to alchemy, especially distillation, were also used in other contexts, especially in the perfume industry.
