ABSTRACT

189Aneurin Bevan was a great man of government and a giant of Labour Party history. His achievement in creating the National Health Service changed the lives of millions, both those alive at the time of its creation on 5th July 1948, and all those generations since who have enjoyed the benefit of healthcare free at the point of delivery. Bevan made universal healthcare a right British people could expect. In Danny Boyle’s 2012 London Olympic Games opening ceremony, the National Health Service was celebrated as a uniquely British achievement of which the nation can be proud.
