ABSTRACT

The theme of childhood games is excellent for encouraging people to take part physically, often without requiring too much skill or exertion. Using the traditional toys could be part of a ‘games afternoon’ in which skipping rhymes, clapping songs and singing games (for example ‘Oranges and Lemons’) are also revisited. The success of outside games depends very much on the outside area available for one's use, health and safety measures that need to be kept in place, and the mobility level of participants. However, many such games can be successfully recreated by members of staff assisting and working alongside service users. Food and drink may be taken along to hold a picnic as part of the activities. Some people may remember going on outings as children where they had a picnic followed by games.
