ABSTRACT

People living in smaller communities may remember specific shopkeepers and assistants by name (such as the butcher, baker, fishmonger and grocer), while others may have stories to tell about experiences while out shopping, such as getting separated from others and feeling lost. Methods of payment have changed considerably over the past 50 years. Where once almost everyone paid in cash, it is now much more common to use credit and debit cards. Views towards buying items on credit have also changed with passing time. Researching the current shops and their logos provides an opportunity for a trip into town. This could be combined with other memory-based activities, such as taking photos of buildings whose use has changed, visiting a museum that has accessible handling collections of memorabilia, or buying the ingredients for an old-fashioned food dish.
