ABSTRACT

Experiences at the seaside can be remarkably stimulating to the senses. The group members are encouraged to spend some time through each of the senses and and to make a list of all the sensory triggers at the seaside. Different senses such as sight, sound, smell, taste, touch and movement are considered. This can be a useful activity for getting people to recreate experiences in their own imaginations, and thus assist the recall of memories. It is also an activity in which people with less verbal ability can become fully engaged. Memory recording project could be extended by recording the seaside memories—memories possibly triggered by looking at the artwork and listening to the group’s memories. This would give group members a role, not only in sharing their own memories, but also in recognising the value of other people’s memories.
