ABSTRACT

This chapter lists a set of activities that provide the perfect opportunity for each group member to bring along a recording of their favourite music from the past. This might be a good way to start a particular session, with the person introducing the piece themselves and saying why they like it and what memories they associate with it. A well-known piece of music is played from a decade that would have been important to all group members-this may be from when they were teenagers or young adults. The members are asked to paint a picture in response to the music, possibly depicting a memory from that time in their lives. An alternative is to model clay to music, creating a three-dimensional image of someone or something associated with the music. This can be a very relaxing activity, but can also be powerful in evoking memories. It is also an excellent means of self-expression for people with limited speech.
