ABSTRACT

The items appropriate to trigger memories depends on the age range of group members, and whether they lived in a traditional family home or a more institutional environment when young. There were also significant differences in when electricity and indoor bathrooms became available for those living in council or private housing and in urban or rural areas. Outline plans are easier to produce and do not need such well- developed artistic skills to create a clear impression of the place where a person lived. With its strong smell, polish can often bring back memories. This activity combines olfactory stimuli with touch and movement, as participants discuss their memories of household tasks and home life while carrying out the practical activity of polishing shoes or other objects such as brass or wooden ornaments-be sure to use the correct polish for each. The repetitive polishing movement is relatively easy to reproduce and may trigger memories of similar tasks done in the past.
