ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the importance for goal pursuit, for individuals and groups, that value, truth, and control work together. It describes the advantages to goal pursuit when locomotion motivation, which is a control motivation, and assessment motivation, which is a truth motivation, work together. The chapter reviews evidence that locomotion motivation and assessment motivation are complementary. Value effectiveness is about success with respect to outcomes, about the consequences of goal pursuit – success in ending with benefits versus costs, pleasure versus pain, biological needs satisfied versus unsatisfied. The motivations to be effective in truth and to be effective in control go beyond just the hedonic motivation of maximizing pleasure and minimizing pain. To appreciate better how truth and control can work together as partners, it is useful to consider the distinct motivations of assessment and locomotion and how they work together.
