ABSTRACT

Kung Te, nicknamed "Kung, the Blind," was a Nien military strategist and chief of the White Banner. Kung Te's family had been very poor since the time he was little. His father died young and his mother raised him by doing odd jobs. Kung Te was poor, but filial. Realizing that his mother had suffered great hardship to raise him, he always had his mother's well-being as his first concern. One day, Kung Te and his friends went out to transport smuggled salt. By coincidence, it was just at this time that a rich old man in the village lost an ox. Kung Te's killing of the old man really frightened some guards. They hastily knelt down and kowtowed to Kung Te to spare their lives. He set fire to his ruined hut and, carrying his mother on his back, headed to Mount Dragon to join the Nien.
