ABSTRACT

The focus of this chapter is on ‘Active Learning’, which is rooted in the work of Dewey. The role of the mentor was to engage the learner in their coaching and assist them in modelling the thinking process. It is about facilitating the learning through questions that challenge the understanding and learning process of those involved. The importance of timely observations are highlighted and how Active Learning provides an opportunity for the mentee to develop their own observational rubric, helping to shape and direct the learning potential.
