ABSTRACT

This chapter reviews different approaches to the nature of power and how it has been discussed in the context of anarchism and looks at how power exists in organizations. Power manifests itself in different levels of society and personal relationships. The chapter considers a specific collective consensus decision making method and discusses the possibilities and limits of anarchist practices of decision making. Decision making, a core activity of any business organization, would be described in textbooks as an activity carried out by a manager or a managerial team. It explores the lessons from anarchist decision making practices for other organizations. Anarchists consider decision making as something that should not be left in the hands of the few but as something that the many should be involved in. This is based on the anarchist ideals of aiming towards organizations without permanent hierarchies and which have flatter forms of organizing that divide power more equally.
