ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on several examples that, on the surface, have little in common with each other, or indeed with management studies. It discusses some examples of individuals who were inspired by anarchism and also held management positions. The chapter explores the similarities and differences between anarchism and management in how they responded to the changes in how work was performed and organized during and after the Industrial Revolution. An anarchist prehistory also offers another challenge, this time to the historical project of the left political party which wishes to lead the state. “Prefiguration has been an important concept in the anarchist tradition since the late 19th century. Prefiguration has its roots in radical left and anarchist social movement practices. Anarchist leaders were concerned with their workers’ communities and their health, education and capacity to exercise political leadership and pressured capitalist owners for benefits to ensure some protection for these communities.
