ABSTRACT

Several editions of Sidney letters have reached publication in the past few years. Roger Kuin’s magisterial edition of The Correspondence of Sir Philip Sidney (2012) makes available the nearly four-hundred letters written by and to Philip Sidney, both in their original languages and in clear, accurate, and readable translations. This edition will generate a variety of significant research opportunities. Conveniently assembled for future biographers, it provides considerable material for reshaping the previous narratives of Sidney’s life. Sidney’s letters reveal his deep education in public affairs and his persistent preoccupation with politics and religion. The Correspondence will generate new studies of Sidney’s network of contacts on the continent (Hubert Languet’s réseau), as well as his education in rhetoric, religion, and matters of state.
