ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book provides some articles of Gail Paradise Kelly that span almost a twenty-year period. Gail looked at the question of revolution or reform and saw a need for fundamental change. The book demonstrates the absolute folly of ignoring culture, gender and social class issues when trying to educate. It shows how such limited vision was built directly into the curriculum and that it was more than an individual teacher's misconception. The book examines staffing and authority patterns from a gender perspective, examined roles of women shown in textbooks, and classroom interaction patterns between males and females. It also examines the gendered tracking of various fields of intellectual pursuit. Gail began in the late 1970s and early 1980s from an American perspective and then brought feminist concerns to an international context in articles about Third World women.
