ABSTRACT

The University of the South Pacific (USP) is a regional university which serves eleven Pacific states. The USP's distance education programme was established in 1971 and is basic to the efforts of the University to make its presence felt in the eleven countries of the region. Women have been in the forefront in this programme as students, teachers, course writers and developers and administrators. Of the four academic staff officially designated as course developers in USP's Extension Services, three are women. Just as science is groping for answers, science educators in the Pacific are reaching out to the successful teaching of science. The Continuing Education section of the Extension Services at the USP has engaged in a variety of activities for and by women since the section was first established by Marjorie Crocombe. The Continuing Education section also conducts a monthly seminar programme via satellite for women's programme staff working on government and NGO programmes and projects.
